Life has a way of surprising us with unexpected turns that can change the course of our journey forever. For Monica Carrera, this moment came when she decided to volunteer at Ground Zero after the tragic events of 9/11. Although the experience was difficult, it brought out the best in New Yorkers, who came together to support one another in the face of adversity. Monica's time there not only set her on a new path in life but also brought her to the love of her life, a firefighter who shared her passion for helping others. Together, they co-founded Gear Up Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to making a positive impact on the world.
An Unexpected Journey of Unwavering Faith
Monica was born and raised in Ecuador, where her father encouraged her and her brothers to pursue careers in law. However, Monica had other aspirations and wanted to become a journalist. Her father convinced her to study law instead, telling her that it would provide her with a more complete set of skills. Monica didn't finish her law degree, but later became an interior designer and started her own business, PLUS DESIGN. Unfortunately, the Ecuadorian banking system's collapse in 1998 led to her bankruptcy and thousands of other small businesses in the country. Nonetheless, Monica remained steadfast in her faith and looked to God's guidance to help her overcome these obstacles.
Following the devastating 9/11 attacks, Monica found herself stranded but determined to help in any way she could. She volunteered at Ground Zero and provided support at Saint Vincent's Hospital, where she distributed meals and coffee to the brave first responders and firefighters working tirelessly at the site. This experience deeply impacted her and set her on an unexpected journey that changed her life forever.
One day while waiting for their trains, Monica met a firefighter who, like her, had firsthand knowledge of the horrors of 9/11. They shared their experiences, fell in love, and married a few years later. Together, they established the Gear Up Foundation, based on her husband's promise to God after surviving a secondary collapse while volunteering at Ground Zero.
Honoring the Gallantry of First Responders
The foundation's primary mission is to honor those who lost their lives on 9/11 and those who continue to suffer from illnesses related to the toxic environment at Ground Zero. It also aims to provide support and resources to first responders who were impacted by the events of 9/11.
As the foundation continued to grow, its mission evolved to include providing firefighting equipment, gear, and training to departments in need worldwide. Gear Up Foundation serves as ambassador of goodwill, uniting the world and bringing people together to overcome the devastating impact of the attacks on 9/11.
Through their tireless efforts, Monica and her husband have exemplified the passion, bravery, and brotherhood of firefighters, inspiring others to join their mission and positively impact the world. Today, Gear Up Foundation continues to serve as a beacon of hope, bringing people together and generating healing through the extraordinary brotherhood of firefighters.
Emergency Response and Community Support
Gear Up Foundation has responded to many major catastrophic incidents, including natural disasters and other emergencies. Monica and her team mobilize rapid response teams, which are made up of highly trained firefighters and first responders who travel to affected areas and provide assistance. For example, when a powerful earthquake hit Ecuador in 2016, Monica and her team worked closely with local firefighters to provide support and aid.
One of Gear Up Foundation's most impactful programs is the Children's Fire Safety Program and the Monica Carrera School of Capacitation in Patricia Pilar, Los Rios, Ecuador. Monica and her team provide education and training to children on how to prevent fires and what to do in case of an emergency. The program has graduated over 8,000 children, making a significant impact in the community.
Creating Positive Impact
Monica encourages those who want to make a difference in the world to seek guidance from God first and commit themselves wholeheartedly to their mission. She emphasizes, " My advice is to ask GOD first where your place is to serve him. When you find it, commit yourself forever to whatever mission you undertake."
Monica warmly welcomes anyone who wishes to join the Gear Up Foundation, regardless of their background or expertise. Whether it be experts with innovative fundraising ideas, individuals with new technology to introduce to the foundation's programs, or retired professionals seeking to embark on an extraordinary journey with rewards beyond financial compensation, all are welcome to be a part of this noble cause.
