We all crave thick, luscious, and healthy hair without subjecting it to chemical products with harsh ingredients. Hair loss and hair thinning are issues that plague many these days. Despite countless products in the market targeting these concerns, the damage it does to natural hair is irreversible, especially for women of color with curly hair. Morgan Kelly, founder and CEO of Olivia’s Nectar is here with an all-natural vegan fix for your hair troubles without ruining its natural state.
A personal tragedy set Morgan on the path to creating hair care products that stood out amongst similar products in the industry. While she was always passionate about natural hair, her journey into entrepreneurship took off after the birth of her daughter Adalynn Olivia in the year 2019, who was diagnosed with Alopecia at a very young age. Battling a broken relationship alongside and shouldering the responsibility of two children with a full-time job as a Claims Operations Specialist, she wanted to take charge of her life. Still, when she noticed her daughter’s hair thinning at an alarming rate and, unfortunately, none of the prescribed medicines or remedies worked, prompting Morgan took matters into her own hands and engaged in serious research to find a solution.
Olivia’s Nectar
Morgan’s brainchild “Olivia’s Nectar” took shape in her kitchen, where she concocted natural herbs, organic roots, and vitamins to repair, replenish, and restore damaged hair cuticles and, most importantly, the scalp. After a lot of trial and error, she formulated the first product - Olivia's Nectar Growth Oil – was born which showed remarkable improvement in Olivia’s hair growth after using it for a few weeks. Her hair grew thicker, encouraging Morgan to share her idea with the world to help others in similar situations. Many saw results beyond compare when it came to remedying thinning edges, baldness, thinning hair, damaged hair, or early stages of Alopecia. This inspired Morgan to do more research and formulate her own vegan natural hair products like a deep conditioner, leave-in conditioner, shampoo, and a hair moisturizer, made from natural fruit extracts, organic oils, and butter.
The competition for natural hair care products is enormous, but what makes Olivia’s Nectar stand out is Morgan's personal touch in each formulation. She believes that self-love is as vital as taking care of your hair, which is what her brand stands for – loving your natural self no matter what.
Initial Bumps
Morgan’s journey was filled with trials and tribulations, but her grit and determination kept her going. With the money crunch taking a toll while starting the business, she also staggered with the formulation part of the products as she had no help and no one to motivate her to keep going. As a single mother of two, she had to stand her ground as well as find ways to pump more money into her venture, and her success story is nothing less than commendable. Three years on, Olivia’s Nectar hair products, aimed at repairing damaged and dry hair, are much raved about and recognized as the next big thing for strengthening and nurturing natural curls. Her star product, the growth oil, is gaining popularity as the market's most powerful all-natural herbal hair regrowth oil.
Keeping at it
With Olivia’s Nectar, Morgan wants to spread the message of loving your natural hair and wearing it proudly. To further her mission, she partners with passionate artisans who curate the natural ingredients that make up the products. She believes people’s mindset is changing when it comes to taking care of their natural hair, and once women of color find out what works for them, the haircare industry will diversify and create targeted products rather than market the same things to everyone.
For women who want to get into entrepreneurship, Morgan asks them not to lose hope in the face of adversity. “It is okay to start small as success does not happen overnight. Stay consistent, as all days will not be the same. Keep pushing yourself through the challenges and have faith in what you are pursuing; things will work themselves out,” said Morgan.
