Suzi Hixon, Esq. is an experienced trademark attorney and a true innovator in the legal industry, carving out a unique niche for herself as an AI-driven legal tech consultant and self-advocacy champion. With over two decades of experience in corporate law firms and as the founder of her own boutique IP practice, Suzi is a trailblazer with a passion for the intersection of art and science. As a biology major turned patent and trademark attorney, Suzi's STEM background is an asset in her approach to revolutionizing legal practices. She has made it her mission to help lawyers embrace technology without fear, set boundaries, and achieve better work-life balance.
After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, Suzi was uncertain about her career path. However, she ended up attending law school and passing the Patent Bar, which led her to secure a job as a patent prosecutor. Suzi was eager to integrate her science background into her legal career and found that patent work, which involves helping individuals protect their inventions, was a great fit. While her initial job involved working on patents related to mechanical inventions like medicine bottle openers, childproof caps, lighting fixtures, and flavor amendments for cigarettes, Suzi quickly transitioned into trademark work, which focused on helping individuals protect their logos, words, and designs.
Suzi's passion for innovation and a desire to avoid the bureaucracy of a large firm led her to start her own boutique law practice, where she primarily focused on trademark enforcement and protection for her clients. By leveraging technology, Suzi developed a web-based law practice that allowed her to take on clients from around the world, becoming location independent.
In 2020, Suzi recognized that many women lawyers were leaving their practices due to the pandemic's effects, including additional responsibilities at home. She also observed that mental health issues were causing many women to leave the legal profession. Suzi felt that it was crucial to address these issues and determine what was causing women to leave their practices, leading her to start Legally Blissed®, a community for female lawyers that focuses on mental health support, self-advocacy, and work-life balance. Through her work, Suzi is making a significant impact in the legal industry and empowering women to achieve their full potential.
To address these issues, Suzi developed a methodology called the bliss method, which includes setting boundaries, leveraging technology and AI, integrating creativity, building self-confidence, and seeking support. Legally Blissed® provides a community for women lawyers to connect, support each other, and learn from each other's experiences. The community has members who are currently practicing law, as well as those who have left the legal profession but still advocate in some way. Through Legally Blissed®, Suzi is empowering women lawyers to prioritize their own well-being and advocate for themselves, enabling them to become better advocates for others.
The community provides resources and expert guest speakers to help women lawyers navigate important issues such as setting boundaries, self-advocacy, and work-life balance. The community is open to all lawyers, whether they are practicing or not. The community is currently mostly made up of experienced women lawyers, but Suzi hopes to see it expand to include more law students in the future. Legally Blissed® also includes a podcast called "Legally Blissed Conversations," where Suzi talks to women in legal fields and related areas about their journeys to success, their inspirations, and the obstacles they have overcome. The podcast has recently expanded to include live YouTube events, including roundtable discussions and solo talks about important issues such as AI and mindset. Suzi's community and podcast are making a significant impact in the legal industry, providing a supportive and empowering space for women lawyers to thrive.
As Suzi continues to evolve and grow in her legal career, she has found a new passion for helping self-proclaimed technology-challenged lawyers integrate legal tech, particularly AI, into their practices. She understands that lawyers can be hesitant to adopt new technology and that every law practice and legal practice area is different. Therefore, Suzi looks at different steps of their workflow and helps them figure out where it makes sense to integrate AI based on the current state of the technology and privacy and data laws.
For example, AI can be used in initial client intake, onboarding, and business development. It can help lawyers write content and outlines faster and in their own style, review contracts, and even predict outcomes. To help lawyers understand the compliance requirements when it comes to legal tech, Suzi is starting a YouTube channel in May called "TechEASE for Lawyers," where she will talk with industry founders about their tech and ensure that they are compliant with client confidentiality requirements. Suzi's work in legal tech is helping lawyers adapt to the rapidly changing industry and stay ahead of the game.
