Wanda L. McArn: A Visionary on a Mission to End Homelessness

Wanda L. McArn: A Visionary on a Mission to End Homelessness

In a world riddled with social disparities and systemic challenges, there are individuals who stand up to make a difference, transforming their personal experiences into a catalyst for change. Among these inspiring figures, Wanda L. McArn shines as a beacon of hope and resilience. As the visionary founder and CEO of Next Step Development Corporation (NSDC), Wanda has dedicated her life to combating homelessness, addressing mental health issues, and revolutionizing the concept of affordable housing.

In 2019, Wanda found herself standing at the crossroads of her life, on the cusp of reaching a significant milestone: her sixtieth birthday. Reflecting upon her experiences and yearning for a meaningful change, Wanda made a bold decision—to retire from her successful career, which had spanned over three decades. With no concrete plan in mind, she embarked on a path of self-discovery, trusting that the universe would guide her toward her true purpose.

As fate would have it, the world was soon gripped by the unrelenting grip of the COVID-19 pandemic. While the pandemic brought immense suffering, it also gave Wanda the precious gift of time—time to reflect, ponder, and chart a new course for herself.

During this contemplative period, Wanda narrowed down her priorities to three essential causes: ending homelessness, addressing mental health issues, and empowering young people. As she delved deeper into her research, an epiphany struck her—she realized that she could tackle homelessness and mental health challenges simultaneously, all within the framework of a nonprofit organization.

Drawing upon her extensive background in consulting, acquired during her tenure at W.W. Grainger, Inc., a renowned industrial distribution company, Wanda possessed the expertise needed to build a successful enterprise. Over the course of 20 years at Grainger, she had worked her way up from a sales leader to a consulting division, where she led a team of consultants across the nation. Through this experience, she honed her skills in understanding and streamlining business processes, working closely with CEOs, CFOs, and vice presidents of operations.

Wanda's background as a consultant became an invaluable asset as she ventured into the realm of nonprofit work. Armed with the knowledge that a nonprofit organization is essentially a business with a different tax status, she set out to establish Next Step Development Corporation (NSDC) with meticulous planning and attention to detail. While many consultants in the field advocated for a long-term approach, Wanda's mindset had been shaped by her years of ensuring efficiency and effectiveness from the outset. She was determined to lay a strong foundation for NSDC right from the beginning, setting the stage for sustainable growth and impact.

Since its establishment as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 2021, Next Step Development Corporation (NSDC) has emerged as a beacon of hope in North Carolina's fight against chronic homelessness. Guided by a powerful mission, NSDC aims to provide supportive housing solutions for individuals experiencing homelessness or living without a stable residence. With an unwavering commitment to making a lasting impact, NSDC is transforming the lives of vulnerable individuals through the development of tiny home villages, affordable housing units, and emergency shelters.

At the heart of NSDC's approach lies a deep understanding of the complex challenges faced by those experiencing homelessness. Recognizing that stable housing is the foundation upon which lives can be rebuilt, NSDC is dedicated to offering physical shelter and a comprehensive range of supportive services. Through the provision of case management, job training, and life skills development, NSDC empowers individuals to regain their independence and self-sufficiency.

Moreover, NSDC understands that mental health and substance abuse issues often contribute to the cycle of homelessness. To address this critical aspect, NSDC offers support groups, counseling services, and access to vital resources that prioritize mental health and substance use recovery. By acknowledging and addressing the interconnected nature of homelessness and mental health, NSDC ensures that individuals receive the holistic care they need to thrive.

NSDC's commitment to the community extends beyond the provision of housing and essential services. Recognizing the importance of fostering a sense of belonging and social connectedness, NSDC emphasizes resident-focused community services. Initiatives such as vegetable gardens, food pantries, clothing closets, and access to basic essentials create a supportive environment where individuals can feel a part of a larger community. These initiatives not only meet immediate needs but also encourage self-sufficiency and personal growth.

The journey towards stable housing and a brighter future can be daunting, but NSDC stands as a guiding light, illuminating the path to stability and belonging. Through their tireless efforts, Wanda and the NSDC team are working diligently to transform the lives of individuals experiencing homelessness, one step at a time.

Looking ahead, NSDC's ambitious goals and unwavering dedication continue to shape its vision. They are actively seeking partnerships with community organizations, government entities, and businesses that share their commitment to creating sustainable solutions for homelessness. By collaborating with like-minded stakeholders, NSDC strives to expand its impact, extend its reach, and drive systemic change.

Wanda offers valuable advice for individuals looking to address homelessness and make a difference in their communities. She emphasizes starting small and building from there, highlighting the power of community engagement and collaboration. Whether it's corporations partnering with local organizations or individuals mobilizing their families and social groups, everyone can contribute in their own unique way.

Wanda encourages individuals to go beyond temporary relief and consider the deeper issues surrounding homelessness. She urges them to ask where people go at night, emphasizing the need for safe and stable housing. Financial contributions need not be grand; even small, consistent commitments can add up and support housing initiatives. Wanda stresses the importance of advocacy, encouraging individuals to engage with local government entities, attend meetings, and express concerns about affordable housing.

Wanda's advice is to start with one small step, focusing on a specific area of interest or concern. Whether it's understanding homelessness among children or supporting initiatives for homeless youth, individuals can make a meaningful impact by committing to their chosen cause. Wanda's dedication inspires all who seek to address homelessness, showing that everyone has a role to play in creating lasting change.
